If you're a seafood lover looking for an authentic Korean culinary experience, Samcheonpo Harbor in southern Korea is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. During my recent visit, I indulged in three iconic dishes that showcase Korea’s deep-rooted love for ocean flavors: Jeonbokjuk (Abalone Porridge), Jeonbok Mulhoe (Cold Raw Abalone Soup), and a vibrant plate of Haesam Meongge (Sea Cucumber & Sea Squirt). I’ll be sharing my own photos from the visit, but here’s a taste of what makes these dishes so special.

๐Ÿš Jeonbokjuk: Korea’s King of Porridge

Jeonbokjuk is a luxurious rice porridge made with fresh abalone, sesame oil, and a touch of sea essence. Often referred to as the “king of porridges,” it’s not only delicious but also incredibly nutritious. Abalone is rich in protein, minerals, and low in fat, making this dish a favorite among health-conscious Koreans. The version I tasted in Samcheonpo was briny, creamy, and packed with generous chunks of abalone—comforting and energizing all at once.

๐ŸงŠ Jeonbok Mulhoe: A Chilled Seafood Sensation

Mulhoe is a refreshing cold soup made with raw seafood, spicy gochujang sauce, and crisp vegetables. The abalone mulhoe I tried was a revelation—thinly sliced raw abalone served in an icy, tangy broth that awakened every taste bud. It’s the perfect dish for warm weather and a great way to appreciate the delicate texture of abalone in its purest form.

๐ŸŒŠ Haesam Meongge: Bold Flavors from the Sea

Sea cucumber and sea squirt might be unfamiliar to many foreigners, but they’re beloved in Korea for their unique textures and health benefits. Sea cucumber is prized for its collagen and anti-inflammatory properties, while sea squirt offers a briny, iodine-rich punch. Served raw with dipping sauces, this dish is a true celebration of Korea’s coastal bounty.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Why Koreans Love Seafood

Korea’s geography—surrounded by ocean on three sides—has shaped its cuisine into one of the most seafood-rich in the world. From street stalls to fine dining, seafood is a daily staple. Koreans value freshness, seasonality, and the health benefits of marine ingredients. Dishes like jeonbokjuk and haesam meongge aren’t just meals—they’re part of a cultural heritage that honors the sea.
