๐Ÿ“ What Is the Yeoncheon Chrysanthemum Festival?

Held annually in Yeoncheon County, just north of Seoul, the Yeoncheon Chrysanthemum Festival is one of Korea’s most charming autumn flower festivals. In 2025, it ran from October 17 to October 26, offering just 10 days to witness a sea of chrysanthemums in full bloom.

But what makes this festival truly unique? It takes place on the grounds of the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site, a Neolithic archaeological park dating back hundreds of thousands of years. Imagine walking through fields of golden flowers while standing on ancient human history — it’s a surreal blend of nature and time.

๐ŸŒธ A Sea of Chrysanthemums

The festival spans over 15,000 pyeong (about 5 hectares), filled with more than 40,000 chrysanthemum pots arranged into stunning displays. From bonsai chrysanthemums to towering floral sculptures shaped like hot air balloons and mammoths, every corner is a photo opportunity.

The chrysanthemum, or gukhwa (๊ตญํ™”) in Korean, is more than just a flower here — it’s a symbol of nobility, longevity, and resilience. It’s also a beloved motif in Korean poetry, famously appearing in the works of poet Seo Jeong-ju, who once wrote:

“Even in the cold wind, the chrysanthemum blooms quietly.”

๐Ÿ Autumn Weather & Atmosphere

October in Korea is magical. The skies are a deep, endless blue, the air is crisp and clean, and the sunlight casts a golden glow over everything. During our visit, the weather was perfect — cool enough for a light jacket, with just the right breeze to carry the sweet scent of chrysanthemums through the air.

Families, couples, and photographers wandered the paths, stopping at photo zones and interactive exhibits. Children giggled among the giant flower sculptures, while elders admired the artistry of the bonsai chrysanthemums.

๐ŸŽŸ️ Free Admission & Parking

Yes, you read that right — admission and parking are completely free! It’s rare to find such a well-organized, large-scale event that’s so accessible to everyone. Kudos to Yeoncheon County for making this possible. The effort and care they put into this festival truly shows.

๐Ÿž️ A Festival Rooted in History

The location itself adds a layer of depth to the experience. The Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site is one of Korea’s most important archaeological discoveries, offering a glimpse into the lives of early humans. Walking through the festival, you’re literally treading on ancient ground — a reminder of how nature and culture have always been intertwined in Korea.
